Why the Odd Timing?

The UK tax year starts on 6 April due to a historical quirk. The financial year originally started on 25 March (Lady Day). When Britain switched from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar in 1752, days were skipped. To avoid losing tax revenue, the Treasury adjusted the start date, eventually settling on 6 April.
